birthday is Hike 19, was invited to sit down Wednesday to chat with some former students, current students and co-workers in the very same library named in her honor years ago. Having traveled singular from South Dakota to Columbiaville in 1941 at 26 years of age for a teaching job, Collins was a teacher and librarian in the district for nearly 40 years before her retirement in 1981. Collins was in the region when the... "She ran a tight ship," laughed Luoma of Collins, who also played piano for solos and ensembles in the high school's band program after bashful from the district. "She worked really, really hard to move this forward and make sure kids had opportunities. In organizing the library, Collins said "We get a few books from each one of the elemental schools. We probably had less than 100 books, anything that they had that was worth bringing along. And how did she help raise money in those days for new reads. "We had at least two or three fish fries those sooner couple of years to get money to buy some new books so we'd have something that was nicer," she said. Laughing at the story nearby were Ann Kinzer, the librarian who succeeded her and current librarian, Julie Williams. Record School Principal Mary Haslinger said Kinzer helped organize the event. Haslinger recalled when the district got its first computer lab with the relief of three students after the elementary school library housed in a portable trailer burned to the ground. Computers were just coming in as Collins stepped aside from the librarian proposition, in which she kept a firm hand. "Back in those days, the library had to be quiet," she said. "It had to be a place that kids could come and work if they wanted to. It was not a place for them to come in and visit. Looking back on her outdated, memories thick in the air, Collins shared her fondness for being a Falcon. "I never hesitated about coming to school. I loved it. The library was a special place," she said, remembering the coffee urn in a side work where staff would gather and munch on snacks while chatting. "It was like Christmas a lot of times when you got these boxes of new books, couldn't wait to get them open and go through them. Collins' kinsmen is holding a celebration for her birthday this weekend, after she plays the organ, which she still does at the Columbiaville United Methodist Church to the surprise of some. "They're amazed and I said, well the brains and the fingers still league, so I can play," she said.
